Filming and Photography

Welcome to our Grade I listed Georgian townhouse at 17 Gough Square, tucked away just off Fleet Street in the heart of London. This remarkably preserved time capsule from the Age of Enlightenment offers an authentic period backdrop for film and photo shoots, as well as talent interviews.

With its original 17th-century features and storied history, every corner of the property exudes character. Its location in a quiet square—removed from busy roads and traffic—ensures minimal noise interference for superior sound recording.

The five-storey property retains many of its original features, which include:

  • Historic panelling

  • A fine open staircase

  • Wooden floorboards

  • A quirky cellarette cupboard

  • Coal holes

  • Original 17th-century door handles.

  • The 18th-century front door still has its original anti-burglary devices intact, including a heavy chain with corkscrew latch and spiked iron bar over the fanlight.

Every room in the House is available for hire, and so are the period chairs and window seats—each offering its own unique slice of history.

The Parlour

Located on the ground floor, this beautifully wood-panelled room with its original fireplace is straight out of a period drama, providing a rich, atmospheric setting.

The Withdrawing Room

On the first floor, the Withdrawing Room offers an evocative backdrop overlooking Gough Square. With its original wooden floors and window seats, this gallery room can be divided into two spaces—one traditionally for ladies, and the other for gentlemen. Flooded with natural light from three sides, it is bright on summer evenings and enchantingly atmospheric in winter.

The Library and Will Room

The book-lined Library, adorned with classic gold drapery, and the adjacent Will Room across the second-floor landing provide more intimate spaces ideal for talent interviews and smaller shoots. Both rooms are quiet, well-lit, and steeped in history.

The Garret

At the very top of the house lies the Garret—where Dr Johnson and his assistants once compiled the famed Dictionary of the English Language. This authentic 18th-century space, reminiscent of a struggling writer’s sanctum, adds an extra layer of historical allure to your project.

Discover the charm and authenticity of Dr Johnson’s House—a unique venue where history comes to life, offering an unparalleled setting for your film and photography projects.
